The engagement, led by the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, CGC Dr. A. A. Adeniyi, MFR, PSC(+), and the Director-General of Customs, Republic of Benin, Colonel Raouf Malèhossou, focused on the Seme-Krake Border Modernization Initiative, including its progress, key deliverables and the CDES Pilot being advanced through the Joint Technical Working Group comprising the two Customs administrations.

The initiative reflects the shared commitment of Nigeria and Benin to strengthening border management, improving trade facilitation and efficiency, and advancing regional economic integration. It also aligns with broader regional and continental priorities under ECOWAS, the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and Afreximbank.

The well-attended joint ceremony, chaired by both Customs leaders, brought together key stakeholders from Nigeria and the Republic of Benin and represents an important milestone in the evolution of coordinated customs administration and the modernization of the Seme-Krake border corridor.

A Strategic Gateway for Regional Trade

The Seme-Krake corridor occupies a strategic position in the economic relationship between Nigeria and Benin and serves as an important gateway to the wider West African market.

A modern, efficient, coordinated and predictable border environment is critical to unlocking the potential of cross-border trade, regional value chains, private-sector investment, logistics and economic integration within ECOWAS and the wider African market.

The Nigeria–Benin Chamber of Commerce and Industry was represented by its President, Alhaji Fatai Shokunbi; Director-General, Mr. Emmanuel Essien; Ms. Olubukola Agemo, Deputy President, Policy, Research & Advocacy; and Amb. Nicky F. Maxwell, Deputy President, Business Development & Partnership.

For NB-CCI, the engagement reinforces the importance of sustained collaboration between Customs administrations, government institutions and the organized private sector in creating a more seamless, efficient, transparent, predictable and business-friendly border environment.

N-BIDEA and the Future of the Seme-Krake Corridor

The modernization of Seme-Krake is particularly significant to the Chamber's flagship Nigeria–Benin Business Integration, Development and Economic Advancement (N-BIDEA) Programme.

N-BIDEA is a five-year strategic initiative designed to strengthen cross-border business integration, facilitate trade and investment, promote private-sector participation, and support sustainable economic development between Nigeria and Benin.

The successful modernization of the Seme-Krake corridor will provide an important foundation for achieving these objectives by reducing trade barriers, improving the movement of legitimate goods and people, supporting business formalization, strengthening institutional cooperation and creating greater opportunities for bilateral and regional value-chain development.

The Chamber therefore views this historic Customs engagement as an important step towards transforming Seme-Krake into a stronger gateway for Nigeria–Benin bilateral trade, investment and regional economic integration.

The future of Nigeria–Benin trade is inseparable from the modernization and effective management of this strategic corridor.
