On 10 August 2026, the Director-General of the NB-CCI, Mr. Emmanuel Essien, accompanied by the Deputy President, Business Development and Partnership, Ambassador Nicky Maxwell, paid a courtesy visit to the Comptroller of the NCS Seme Area Command, Comptroller A. S. Kaila, at the Command.

The visit provided an opportunity for the NB-CCI leadership to formally introduce the Chamber, its mandate, strategic priorities, and ongoing initiatives aimed at supporting legitimate cross-border trade, investment, private-sector development, and economic integration along the Nigeria–Benin corridor.

N-BIDEA FRAMEWORK TAKES CENTRE STAGE

A major focus of the engagement was the Chamber's flagship Nigeria–Benin Business Integration, Development and Economic Advancement (N-BIDEA) Programme, a five-year strategic initiative designed to strengthen cross-border business integration, facilitate trade and investment, promote private-sector participation, and support sustainable economic development between both countries.

The NB-CCI delegation briefed the Comptroller on the N-BIDEA Framework and its strategic relevance to the Seme–Krake economic corridor, particularly in the areas of:

• Trade facilitation and corridor efficiency;
• Customs procedures and border processes;
• Formalisation and development of cross-border businesses;
• Private-sector engagement;
• Regulatory cooperation;
• Trade information and transparency;
• Institutional collaboration; and
• Development of regional value chains.

The discussion underscored the strategic role of the Nigeria Customs Service in facilitating legitimate trade and ensuring that the Seme–Krake corridor operates with greater efficiency, transparency, predictability and compliance.

The engagement also highlighted the importance of closer cooperation between the organised private sector and border-management institutions in identifying practical and sustainable solutions to challenges affecting legitimate businesses and traders operating along the corridor.

TOWARDS A FORMAL WORKING ENGAGEMENT

Following the positive preliminary engagement, arrangements are being advanced for a formal working visit and technical presentation of the N-BIDEA Framework to the NCS Seme Area Command.

The proposed working session will provide an opportunity for the NB-CCI to present the Framework in greater detail, receive technical observations from the Command, and identify specific areas in which the Chamber and the Nigeria Customs Service can collaborate.

The NB-CCI also intends to seek the appropriate institutional support and endorsement of the NCS Seme Area Command for relevant components of the N-BIDEA Framework, particularly those relating to customs procedures, trade facilitation, border efficiency, trade information, compliance, and structured public-private dialogue.

The proposed engagement is expected to establish a more structured platform for continuous consultation between the NB-CCI and the Nigeria Customs Service on issues affecting the competitiveness and effectiveness of the Nigeria–Benin trade corridor.

STRENGTHENING THE SEME–KRAKE TRADE CORRIDOR

The Seme–Krake corridor is strategically important to the economies of Nigeria and Benin and serves as a major gateway for the movement of people, goods, services and investment between the two countries and the wider West African market.

The NB-CCI recognises that unlocking the full economic potential of the corridor requires sustained cooperation among customs administrations, other border agencies, businesses, transport and logistics operators, financial institutions, development partners, and organised private-sector institutions.

The Chamber therefore remains committed to supporting initiatives that improve the efficiency, transparency, predictability, security and competitiveness of the corridor while promoting compliance and legitimate commercial activity.

The NB-CCI expressed its appreciation to Comptroller A. S. Kaila for receiving the delegation and for his positive disposition towards continued institutional engagement and collaboration.

BUILDING A STRONGER NIGERIA–BENIN ECONOMIC CORRIDOR

The NB-CCI will continue to engage relevant government institutions, private-sector organisations, development partners and other stakeholders in advancing practical solutions that can strengthen bilateral trade and investment.

Through the N-BIDEA Programme, the Chamber seeks to contribute to the development of a more integrated Nigeria–Benin economic corridor capable of supporting cross-border investment, regional value chains, formal business development, trade facilitation and sustainable economic growth.

The Chamber believes that stronger cooperation between the organised private sector and institutions such as the Nigeria Customs Service is essential to transforming the Seme–Krake corridor from a major border crossing into a more efficient and competitive regional trade and investment corridor.

ABOUT THE N-BIDEA PROGRAMME

The Nigeria–Benin Business Integration, Development and Economic Advancement (N-BIDEA) Programme is a flagship initiative of the Nigeria–Benin Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NB-CCI), being advanced in collaboration with relevant Nigerian and Beninese stakeholders, including the Embassy of Nigeria in the Republic of Benin.

The Programme provides a structured five-year framework for deepening cross-border business integration and strengthening the institutional and private-sector foundations of Nigeria–Benin economic relations.
