NB-CCI Director-General Participates in Stakeholder Forum on Border Management

The Director-General of the Nigeria–Benin Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NB-CCI), Mr. Emmanuel Essien, participated in the Stakeholder Forum on Border Management as a Border Community Partner, contributing to high-level discussions on strengthening border governance, improving security, and facilitating legitimate cross-border trade.

The Forum, chaired by the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) in collaboration with the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) , was supported by the European Union (EU) and implemented by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) took place at Anabel Apartment & Suites, Asokoro, Abuja on the 15th of July 2026. It brought together representatives of government institutions, border management agencies, security services, civil society organizations, border community leaders, and development partners to deliberate on practical strategies for improving border management in Nigeria.

Throughout the engagement, participants examined key issues affecting border governance, including migration management, border security, the prevention of human trafficking and transnational organized crime, the promotion of safe and regular migration, and the need for stronger cooperation among all stakeholders operating within border communities.

As a representative of the organised private sector and a long-standing advocate for cross-border trade facilitation, Mr. Emmanuel Essien emphasized the importance of adopting an integrated border management approach that balances national security with trade facilitation and economic development. He highlighted the critical role that border communities, traders, chambers of commerce, and the private sector play in supporting government efforts to create secure, efficient, and economically productive borders.

The Forum provided an excellent platform for meaningful dialogue, knowledge sharing, and collaboration among stakeholders committed to improving border governance. Discussions also underscored the importance of strengthening institutional coordination, enhancing information sharing, promoting community participation, and building trust between border populations and government agencies.

The Nigeria–Benin Chamber of Commerce and Industry commends the Nigeria Immigration Service, the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, the European Union, the International Organization for Migration, and all participating stakeholders for creating this important platform for engagement. Such initiatives are vital to advancing regional integration, enhancing border security, promoting legitimate cross-border commerce, and supporting sustainable socio-economic development along Nigeria’s international borders.

NB-CCI remains committed to working closely with border management agencies, development partners, government institutions, and the private sector to advance policies and programmes that promote seamless trade, secure borders, responsible migration management, and stronger economic cooperation between the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Republic of Benin, in line with the objectives of ECOWAS and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
