AGOA: A Window of Opportunity for Nigeria and Benin SMEs
The extension of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) through 31 December 2026 is more than a policy development—it is a window of opportunity that businesses in Nigeria and Benin should actively position themselves to use.
Both Nigeria and Benin are currently AGOA-eligible, giving qualifying businesses access to preferential, duty-free entry into the U.S. market for a wide range of products. Benin also qualifies for AGOA textile and apparel benefits.
For SMEs, this can translate into new export markets, increased production, investment, jobs and foreign-exchange earnings—particularly in sectors such as agriculture and Agro-processing, textiles and apparel, handicrafts, processed foods and other exportable products.
The real question, however, is not whether the opportunity exists, but whether our SMEs are prepared to take advantage of it.
Businesses that have not yet explored AGOA should begin by identifying products with U.S. market potential, understanding applicable rules of origin and standards, improving packaging and quality compliance, securing the necessary export documentation, and developing reliable production capacity.
For Nigerian and Beninese SMEs, AGOA should not be viewed simply as a government programme. It should be treated as a market-access strategy.
The time to prepare for the American market is now—not when the next extension is announced.
